A Celebration of Sephardic Music:  The music that carried Jews from Spain to all parts of the world

Saturday, March 13, 2010, 7:30 PM

Please join us for a lively, participatory, and moving celebration of Sephardic music.  Cantorial soloist and classical guitarist, Lisa Marcus Jones, will share the music of the Spanish Jews as it evolved through their migrations to Palestine, Arab lands, the Ottoman Empire, Europe, and Latin America.  Miraculously, these Jews nurtured their rich Jewish/Spanish culture in the many places in which they settled around the world.  Their music absorbed the influences of local folk music, while maintaining a decidedly Sephardic flavor and definite Jewish roots.  The result is a rich and varied musical genre that is at times joyous, at times hauntingly beautiful, and always 100% a part of our heritage.

We will sing and hear music from the Shabbat service as well as non-liturgical Sephardic folk songs, many of which were created and passed down from generation to generation by women!  Lisa will provide insight into the cultural and historical context that led to the creation of this music.
