Our school program includes a wide variety of activities. Our curriculum leads students to feeling comfortable and competent in synagogue services.
Community:
Kerem Shalom’s philosophy is:
- We are all part of the Kerem Shalom community
- We all learn together
Each day of classes gather monthly to sing and celebrate holidays together. School-wide activities, including Israel Day or our Passover Celebration, bring all the children together.
Each grade gathers for a special event, a Family Education Program or Shabbat Dinner, once or twice a year.
Commitment to Social Action:
- Each year, we hold our annual Mitzvah Day for families. Events help parents begin social action projects as a family.
- Tzedakah is collected in class and the distribution of funds is decided upon by the Tzedakah Council, made up of 5th and 6th graders elected by their classes
Education Staff:
Our dedicated staff has years of experience and a commitment to professional development.
In addition to faculty workshops and peer observations, our staff participates in professional development over the summer. Five staff members participated in the Research for Better Teaching Course at Wellesley College. Four staff members have participated in the Bureau of Jewish Education’s new Teacher Educator Institute.
Our staff has the same commitment to growing and learning that we have for our children. Our Education Director, Pat Lukens, will be presented at the Hebrew College GISHA Special Needs Conference in 2010 and theHebrew College Educator's Conference in June 2010.
Education for Students with Challenges:
Kerem Shalom is a member of the Sudbury Valley Jewish Special Education Initiative. This collaborative of 5 synagogues has made it possible to offer much more to our students. The Initiative provides the services of a special education consultant who observes students and classes and offers feedback and strategies ot our faculty. The initiative also provides a reading specialist one day a week, and Kerem Shalom has funded a second reading specialist for one more day a week. These specialists provide one-on-one tutoring, do Hebrew assessments and work in the classrooms with the faculty to provide the best possible education for all our children.
Snow (or other reason) Cancellation Policy for Kerem Shalom
Please make a note of our snow cancellation policy and go over this policy with your children. In general, if the Concord Public Schools are closed due to weather, Kerem Shalom School will be closed for the afternoon. If the Concord Public Schools are sent home on early dismissal due to weather, Kerem Shalom School will be closed. If Kerem Shalom needs to close for the afternoon due to deteriorating weather, an announcement will be made in the Concord Public Schools. If your child normally rides the bus to Kerem Shalom, they need to know where to go instead of traveling here.
